Academic Achievements and Campus Leadership of Appalachian Student Athletes
One hundred sixty-four (164) individuals in the Fall 2005 semester and one hundred and fifty (150) students in the Spring 2006 semester made the Athletic Department's Academic Honor Roll by earning a gpa of 3.25 or better. (This is 35% of the student athlete population and this percentage has held for the last four years.)
Of the student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll, in fall 2005, 106 students had GPAs of 3.5 or higher, and nine earned 4.0; in spring 2006, 93 students had 3.5 or higher GPA, and 13 earned 4.0.
Ten of the twenty teams had cumulative team GPA’s of 2.8 or higher, with six of the ten teams having over a 3.0 or higher for their team GPA for spring semester 2006.
Appalachian’s student-athletes compiled a 2.823 cumulative GPA average at the end of the (2006) spring semester.
Fifty student-athletes have graduated in May and August 2006. Three of these graduates earned straight A’s throughout their academic careers.
Meagan Farrell, who graduated with a 4.0 GPA was named to ESPN’s Academic All American Team.
26 former SA’s who graduated in 2005-06 will receive a scholar athlete ring during halftime of the Appalachian/Citadel game. (Recipients must graduate with a 3.0 or higher and participate in a varsity sport their junior and senior years.)
Several teams earned all-academic awards for the fall 2005 and spring 2006 terms. To earn national academic team award, a team must have a minimum cum gpa of 3.0.
Twenty-nine Appalachian State University student-athletes were named to the Southern Conference’s TIAA-CREF Academic all-conference teams for the fall of 2005. Sixteen student-athletes were named in the winter, and 26 names were submitted to the Southern Conference for this recognition in spring 2006.
Four of the twenty teams were recognized by the NCAA as Public Recognition Award Winners for being in the top 10% of their sport for their Academic Progress Rate: Men’s Basketball, Women’s Cross-Country, Women’s Indoor Track and Women’s Outdoor Track. The (APR) is a term-by-term measure of eligibility, retention, and graduation for student-athletes who have received grants-in-aid, and is calculated on a team-by-team basis.
Of the 76 students from Appalachian who were selected by Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, 21 of them were student-athletes.
Four SAs were selected to serve as Appalachian Student Ambassadors for 2005 - 2006. The program is responsible for on-campus tours, host/hostess responsibilities for prospective students and functions for students to better connect to the University.
Many student-athletes are actively involved in community service. These include two members of the men and women’s soccer teams who participated in Alternative Spring Break, providing Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
Academic Services for Athletes in the Learning Assistance Program operates a study hall program for student athletes in their first semester at Appalachian and continuing students who have a gpa below 2.25. This is the fifteenth year of the study hall program.
